UP CHALLENGER #3977 4-6-6-4 W/OIL TENDER

 

In the midst of the great depression, UP made a gusty move to have the ALCO CO. build high speed simple articulated steam engines. The 4-6-6-4 first appeared in 1936 in the UP roadname. They handled great freight tonnage at high speed and found their way into passenger service in the late 30's. All were converted to oil fueled locos prior to WWII.
