Lackawanna 4-6-0 Camelback # 690 - Full Command

Camelback locos (so named because the cab was over the center of the boiler) were designed to burn 'culm', the name for very tiny pieces of anthracite coal that previously was a waste by-product of anthracite mining operations. The design was so successful that Camelbacks were built by all the major railroads operating out of the hard coal fields of Pennsylvania around Scranton. Eventually outlawed by the Government, the Lackawanna was probably the first railroad to convert theirs to rear cab locos. (We believe an original Lackawanna Camelback is on display at a museun in St Louis).
