Lionel pre-1045

LIONEL 1045 OPERATING WATCHMAN

First available from 1938 until 1942, the 1045 operating watchman returned to the catalog in 1946 and remained until 1950. It had a huge, oversized blue plastic man who held up a white signal flag as the train passed. Beside him was a signpost with a diamond-shaped nickel or brass sign affixed to it reading "look out for the locomotive" and "Railroad Crossing." The post was normally painted an aluminum color except during 1941 and 1942, when the aluminum pigment wasn't available because of the war effort. It is very tough to find this piece complete - the watchman's arm holding the flag is commonly missing.
