Lionel pre-2623

2623 MANHATTAN or IRVINGTON PASSENGER CAR -

  • Built in 1941 and 1942
  • The Irvington and Manhattan Cars were the cream of the late prewar passenger crop, with production extremely limited by the advent of World War ll
  • This scale- detailed Pullman had a Bekelite body painted tuscan
  • Cars were numbered/named either 2623 MANHATTAN 2623 or 2623 IRVINGTON 2623 in white heat stamped letters
  • They were equipped with the same 6 wheel timplate truck used on 2226W, and 2263W Tenders used with the 763 Hudsons and 226 2 -6-4 locos
  • These trucks added to the massive appearance of these cars and they were a sight to behold
  • The paint flaked off many of the cars if the bakelite was not thoroougly cleaned; cars with no flaking are difficult to find
  • The heat stamping did not penetrate the baklelite very deeply so if the paint is missing so is the evidence of the heat stamping
