BLACK COMMODORE VANDERBILT WITH 265T TENDER

Although its wheel arrangment was only 2-4-2, the 264E took its styling from streamlined versions of New York Central's famed 4-6-4 Hudson locomotives. In fact, this style of streamlining, designed by the now almost forgotten Carl F. Kantola, was the first applied to a real steam locomotive. The locomotive chosen for this shrouding was none other than the J1E Hudson #5344, the same engine immortilized by Lionel's 700E. Dubbed the Commodore Vanderbilt, this styling was short-lived on the NYC. The shrouding was soon replaced by the flair of Henry Dreyfuss. The model had a die-cast c ab and steam chest and sheet metal shrouding. Built 1936, 1940.
