PASSENGER SET WITH 256 DUAL MOTORED LOCO + 710/712 CARS ( O-GAUGE)

 

  • This was the top of the line O-Gauge set from 1924 thru 1929. The set consisted of an Orange 256 Dual Motor electric loco, 2 Orannge 710 Pullman Cars and 1 matching # 712 Observation Car.
  • This was the very first dual motored model loco ever produced. No other 2 motored locos were made until 1948 when the F-3 was introduced.
  • Modeled after the Boston and Maine Hoosaic Tunnel Type, it also resembled the NYC T-1B.
  • Produced only in Orange with black frame, it was Lionel's top of the line loco when in production from 1924 throught 1930
  • The O-4-4-0 wheel arrangement was also called an 0-B+B-0
  • There are 4 variations as described below
  • Type I: 1924, the side of the body was rubber stamped 'LIONEL' inside a rubber stamped rectanglesurrounding the word Lionel. The loco had spoked wheeels, nickle trim, celluloid omsert headlights and one nickel, non-operating pantograph mounted on the cab roof,
  • Type II: (1925) The rubber stamped rectangle was eliminated, and loco had cast headlights, brass trim and either operating or non-operating pantographs. Sometimes it is found with the later disk wheels
  • Type III: From 1926 thru 1928, brass plates were moounted on both sides of the loco. The plates were etched 'LIONEL LINES - 256'. A stamped rectangle surrounded the legend. The loco now had disk wheels and two brass operating pantographs
  • Type IV:(1929 thru 1930), The bras plates had a double line border around the edges of the plate, and pea green windows
  • Types I, I and III had brass window inserts.
