Lionel pre-385e

LIONEL 385E GUN METAL LOCO MADE 1933 TO 1939 2-4-2 23.5 INCHES LONG WITH TENDER

A 385 loco with gun metal boiler bands with nickel trim and a diecast Ives tender identify the loco as a 'late' 385 made in 1935 and cataloged until the end of the standard gauge era. It is much rarer than earlier models with either copper or nickel bands and with the smaller sheet metal 384T gun metal body. Most of the diecast Ives tenders have detoriated to powder and are hard to find - Lionel made some late in the manufacturing cycle of the 385 which have withstood the test of time and remain ok (they are somewhat difficult to find). 385's come in black or grey with brass or nickel trim (piping, domes, stack, whistle and bell), black painted or red painted drivers, pilot trailing truck wheels, spoked pilot truck wheels 385W tender, whistle diecast body and long oval nickel and black plate that reads "THE LIONEL RAILWAY LINES".
