BLUE COMET STANDARD GAUGE PASSENGER SET - THE COUP DE GRACE OF PRE-WAR TRAINS

Introduced in 1930 (as the 396E with no whistle), The Blue Comet set is simply the most striking train set Lionel ever produced in Standard Gauge. 1931 saw the introduction of the 396W with a whistle tender, and they were built through 1938. It was modeled after The Central Railroad of New Jersey's premium, luxury passenger train that ran from Jersey City to Atlantic City. Lionel spared no details in fashioning their own premier, land luxury liner. The engine has many separately d boiler details, whistle and bell. The passenger cars are what make this set. The roofs are all removable and reveal the opulent interior. They are illuminated, and have great seats (and even two bathrooms per car with sinks and toilets) for the passengers' travelling leisure. As per Lionel's pre-war style, many variations of trim colors (nickel, brass, bronze) and shades of blue were utilized over the years. While not Lionel's rarest train set by any stretch, it was (and still is) easily their most popular and most recognizable set ever produced.
