#54 0-4-4-0 BRASS LOCOMOTIVE (1912-23)

 

This brass "Locomotive De Luxe" 0-4-4-0 top-of- the-line showpiece, was produced from 1912-23. This has simply become one of the rarest Standard Gauge piece's in Lionel's history. As stated in the 1922 catalog, "Nothing richer or more elegant is produced by any manufacturer of electric toy trains. Search the markets of the world.... You must see it to to get the shine of its splendid brass and nickel finish on body, hand-rails, ventilators, headlight, and driving wheels. It is a most elaborate model." The brass body is unlettered, although the engine was always shown lettered and numbered in the catalog's.
  • Three version's were produced;
  • 54 (EARLY 1912); 15 1/2", unlettered brass body, square hoods with "flap-type" ventilators and four red-painted ventilator grilles near ends, two large nickle bells, pedestal or slide-on headlight and auxiliary lighting post, sliding doors, thick-rimmed drivers, side rods, die-cast red-painted pilots and wheels, single motor and dummy motor trucks, reversing switch.
  • 54 (LATE 1913-20) 15 1/2", unlettered brass body with round hoods(similar to steel 42), die-cast red-painted pilots and wheel spokes, red-painted ventilators, single motor and dummy motor, sliding brass door, two nickle bells, pedestal headlight, auxiliary light post, thick-rimmed drivers, long straight- hook couplers.
  • 54 (LATER 1921-23) 15 1/2", unlettered brass body with round hoods(similar to steel 42), die-cast red-painted pilots and wheel spokes, red-painted ventilators. Major additions occured in 1921; two motor trucks, fixed brass doors, two strap headlights, two nickle bells, auxiliary light post, thick-rimmed wheels, two switches(one for direction, and one for changing from AC to DC operation), regular hook couplers.
