Lionel pre-special 1 set

UNKNOWN DEPARTMENT STORE SPECIAL SET

  • This set apparently was a special set for an unknown departmet store; we refer you to page 124, Greenberg's Guide to Lionel Trains, 1901 - 1942, Volume IV, Prewar Sets by Dave McEntarfer
  • The following is quoted from that book: "CONTENTS: 248; 629; 629; 630; eight curved track; two straight track; Type A transformer. The locomotive is red with cream trim and black lettering. The set has been reported with both four-wheel and eight-wheel passenger cars. In all cases the cars were red with cream inserts, black lettering, mottled blue window shades, and nickel journals. The interior boxes are all marked "Red" after the number. At least one set box was stamped on the inside top "296T/30" and "296B/30" on the inside bottom. The eight-wheel cars were probably only available in specials, but the locomotive and four-wheel cars can be found in cataloged sets. . Even though the cars used in the specials are a lighter red, you need the set box for full value." Value published in the book in 1995 for excellent was $750. It has increased substantially in the many years since then. SERIAL>15953EXOBMC:Graded excellent (C-7),
