520 GE BOX CAB ELECTRIC FREITGHT SET (1956)

An interesting set, with newly introduced 520 GE 80-ton boxcab electric. The lionel design was almost an exact replica of GE's original model, and surprisingly a great runner. This set was a late addition to the 1956 product line, one that was designed to meet buyer demands for a train outfit that retailed for under $20. Therefore, the set number was out of numerical sequence for the catalog. Lionel simply assigned the "1542", which was one numeral lower than "1543". The basket weave was an undersized two-tier type. Interesting note, the set box came in two versions. First version had printed #1542 on the side. Second version due to popularity and price, had pasted #1542 over the #1543 set. Lionel totally broke with tradition and placed contents unboxed inside the set box. The 520 was held in place by only a wraparound liner; a component box for this engine does not exist. The other components were seperated by cardboard dividers. The O-27 rolling stock was lower end yet sill had bar-end trucks. Due to it's inexpensive price tag, this set is not usually found intact.
