#628 44 TON NORTHERN PACIFIC 0-27 FRT SET (1956)

Lionel introduced the center cab ENGINE in 1956 as the GE 44 ton diesel. It is an attractive engine but, Lionel took liberties in its proportions. The actual prototype was half the size. In the catalogue for 1956, Lionel even "hyped" it as serving passenger or freight needs. In real life, this was not the case. It served local yard needs moving cars and in "humping" operations. ROLLING STOCK is "run-of-the-mill" low end items but, came with bar-end metal trucks. SET BOX is the new basket-weave style in a single tier version. Components were held in place by corrugate separators.
