204 SANTA FE ALCO AA PASSENGER SET (1957)

This has become an extremely hard set to find boxed, and complete. A very poor seller, because of the stiff competition the 1957 catalog had to offer in the same price range. Also at $49.95, the 204's lacked a whistle, yet the price point was in line with other high end engines and sets. The Santa Fe 204 Alco AA units were new for 1957, and were produced only that one year. Oufit 1586 was the only set to include these SF units. An interesting set, in that Lionel produced the 204's in SF blue and yellow freight paint scheme (a first), and cataloged them in a passenger set. Also, the 204's were probably the best looking of the new Alco series for 1957. An extremely tough engine to find with intact decals and unbroken pilots. The 204T was the only non-powered unit in the new Alco series ('57-'69) ever to come with a headlight. Contents: 204P/204T Santa Fe Alco AA units, two 2432 Clifton Vista Domes, and 2436 Summit or Mooseheart observation in silver with red letter color scheme, O-27 track - eight curved, five straights, 6029 uncoupling section, and 1043 60-watt transformer. Set box was standard two tier O-27 basket weave with blue letters. Engines came in individual corrugated cardboard boxes - 204P and 204T - passenger cars came in Late Classic boxes without the stock numbers printed on all four sides. All pieces came wrapped in paper. Paperwork included the "How to Operate Lionel Trains" booklet, and Lionel Alco Diesel Locomotive directions dated 1957 (tough set of directions to find).
