LIONEL LINES GIRL'S SET STEAM LOCOMOTIVE

The 2037 steam locomotive was a staple of Lionel's product line in 1953, then from 1955 through 1963. However, this unit is not your typical 2037. This one was only available as part of the 1587S "Girl's Set," either in 1957 or 1958. The Girls Set was an attempt by Lionel to tap into a market (women) that the company previously saw as a weakness. The trains in the set were all painted in vibrant, pastel colors. Unfortunately for them, the set did not sell well. Fortunately for collectors, the low sales volume translated into the accruement of ridiculous value. These engines were so unpopular that some Lionel stores actually repainted some of the pink engines black so they could be sold as regular 2037s. Every once in a while, you'll find a black 2037, but pink is visible where there are scratches, instead of the gray casting. This engine has a pink painted die cast body. It features an ornamental bell, Magne-Traction, a three position E unit, working headlight, and smoke unit. It only came with an 1130T-500 small, eight-wheel, streamlined tender.
