736 BERKSHIRE 5-CAR O-GAUGE FREIGHT SET (1953)

 

1953 saw the return of the mighty 736 Berkshire steam engine, after it's one year absence(replaced by the 726RR), because the Alnico magnetic material required for Magnetraction was no longer in limited supply. This was Lionel's top of the line O-gauge steam set for 1953, and retailed for $70. Everything in this set represented the best Lionel had to offer, from play value to packaging. Truly a set worthy of the set collector. Contents included: 736 2-8-4 Berkshire steam engine with operating headlight, smoke, and Magnetraction. Version with engine cab heat- stamped "736", and die-cast metal trailing truck; 2046W "Lionel Lines" streamlined whistle tender; 6460 Bucyrus Erie 6-wheel crane; 3520 searchlight car; 3459X automatic coal dumping car(w/207 coal bag, and 160 dump bin); 3461X automatic lumber car(w/five wooden logs, and 160 dump bin); 6419 DL&W work caboose; eight curved and seven straight O gauge track; UCS Remote Control Track Set; lockon and wire; SP bottle of smoke pellets; wooden smoke tamper; lubricant tube; and paperwork-How to Operate booklet, Service Station booklet, 681 & 736 directions(681-27-1-53), 3461 & 3469 directions, 3520 directions, UCS directions: and 1953 billboard set. All rolling stock came with bar-end trucks. Boxes included; 2213WS outfit set box was one of only a few carry-over style boxes from 1952 with blue frame and letters, instead of the newly christened cirle-L style for 53; 736 used a corrugated cardboard box with liner and paper(made by Kraft St.Joe); 2046W came in a Middle Classic box with liner and paper; 6460 crane came in a Middle Classic box with insert; 3461 & 3469 were Middle Classic "X" versions without liners, with the 160 dump bin packed loose in the set; 3520 came in a Middle Classic box with insert; and 6419 came in a Middle Classic box with liner.
