2222WS 646 HUDSON PASSENGER SET 1954 - UNUSUAL!

  • Set contents: 646 steam locomotive with headlight, smoke and Magnetraction, 2046W Lionel Lines whistle tender, 2530 Railway Express Agency baggage car, 2531 Silver Dawn observation car, and 2532 Silver Range Vista Dome extruded aluminum passenger car, eight curved and seven straight sections of O gauge track, and a UCS uncoupling/unloading track piece. The 646 was newly cataloged in 1954. The number 646 was rubber-stamped on the side of the cab, and the rear trailing truck was diecast. This set was the first one in which the aluminum cars were hauled by a steam engine, and the first time that the new baggage car appeared in a set - initially as the large door version. Indeed, Lionel may not have ever shipped the large door car any other way, confining distribution exclusively to this set. Lionel made several changes during the 1954 year, which changed the details of the components of the set. The baggage car was changed from the large door to small door version. The large door adds considerable value. Glued on name plates had become the norm for the aluminum cars, replacing rivets and hex nuts on the passenger cars, so most sets have glued on name plates on the observation and dome, but earlier rivet or hex nut versions have been found. The 646 numbers on the loco were changed from rubber-stamping to heat-stamping, and the trailing truck changed from diecast to plastic clad sheet metal. It is not certain if some of these "newer" (1955 version) locos were shipped in the 2222 set, but certainly there was a good chance that happened
  • We usually hesitate to grade anything with the aluminum passenger cars Like New because the factory moved the aluminum extrusions around in baskets without protection, resulting in many cars leaving the factory with minor and sometimes major marks/scratches.
