LIONEL 2254 PENNSYLVANIA CONGRESSIONAL SET WITH TUSCAN 2340 GG1 AND FOUR PASSENGER CARS (1955)

  • The real Congressional running on the Pennsylvania between New York and Washington was one of the most famous and heavily used trains in the world
  • In 1952 it was re-equipped with two new eighteen car long train sets with silver cars from Budd. These had maroon stripes on each car.
  • Two maroon GG1's with five stripes were repainted and assigned to the Congressionals (this was the first time the Pennsy deviated from the Brunswick Green GG1's)
  • Each train made a round trip each day beween NYC and Washington DC, with morning and afternoon departures from both cities
  • This was luxury train travel at its finest, with fancy coaches, parlor cars with single seating on each side, a beautiful flat back observation car, diners and lounges
  • It was surpassed only by the Phoebe Snow on the Lackawanna, which had the same flat back observations but the Lackawanna's observations were open to all passengers, not just Pullman passengers who paid extra fare to ride in the o cars
  • Lionel introduced this set in 1955 with the 2340 five striped maroon GG1 - in 1956 it was produced with the 2360 maroon five striped GG1.
  • The Lionel set was also first class all the way.
