NEW YORK CENTRAL F-3 ABA 3 ENGINE SET WITH MIXED DIMPLES

The 2354 was the third time Lionel painted New York Central's dark gray "lightning bolt" on a set of F-3s. The A units were built between 1953 and 1955.
  • The change in number from 2344 to 2354 accompanied several changes, including elimination of wire screens from the roof and replacement with molded louvers, elimination of grab irons, and placement of the horn in the dummy A unit instead fo the powered A unit (for better clarity and sound)
  • The dummy B units were never sold together with the pair of A units, meaning there was never a master carton for all three diesels. However, it was common for all three to leave a train store together
  • Although it is being sold with a pair of 2354s, the B unit is numbered 2344C, the only number ever used on a NYC B unit. There are two distinct variations that sported this same (2344C) number. The first run, from 1950-1952, was made to match the 2344 F-3s and had wire screen rood vents. The later version, made to match the 2354 F-3s, had louvered roof vents and was built between 1953 and 1955.
  • It was also very common for an AA set to come directly from the factory with what collectors today would call a mismatch; one unit with the dimple in the roof and one without. Both molds were in use simultaneously, and, as you could imagine, the factory couldn't coordinate matching pairs with and without a dimple, and many AA were shipped with one body containing the dimple and the other without. SERIAL>15879M: Mint (C-10). Brilliant. No marks, no rubs, no discoloration.
