LIONEL 2461 TRANSFORMER CAR - RED (1947 TO 1948)

Diecast metal depressed center frame, painted medium gray. Usually has black rubber-stamped "2461 LIONEL LINES 2461" in serif lettering on each lower frame rail. Two steps and a brakestand each end of car. Staple-end trucks. Load is a plastic transformer model molded in two halves, painted red or black and then glued together. It attaches to the frame with two screws that thread into square brass nuts trapped in pockets between the halves in the mold. Also sandwiched in at the top are the bases of two long and two short insulators. Very early models use horseshoe washers in addition to glue to retain these insulators, but they were soon omitted. Unfortunately these insulators are easily broken and of course, these have been reproduced.
