616 SANTA FE SWITCHER LOCOMOTIVE

Built from 1961 until 1962. EMD NW2 switcher with operating horn, black painted body with white painted safety stripes, white heat-stamped lettering and Santa Fe medallion, no ornamental trim according to the Lionel service manual (although some examples have been observed with a gold ornamental bell), open ornamental horn slot, early sheet metal frame with skirt, lighted with headlight lens, fixed plastic couplers, two axle Magnetraction, and three position E-unit with lever pointing down. Most were shipped with three open slots in the roof for an E-unit lever, ornamental horn, and bell. The E-unit was the design with the lever pointing down, and controlled from underneath the loco - hence no lever sticks through the top. Most were shipped without the ornamental horn or bell - Lionel filled in the slots in the later production models.
