Lionel pw-6518

6518 DEPRESSED CENTER TRANSFORMER CAR

Built from 1956 until 1958. This was one of the few Lionel rolling stock pieces to have four trucks instead of the usual two. The diecast body was exactly the same as the 6418 flat car with girder loads, except this car has two holes for screw-mounting the transformer. They came in both flat and glossy gray paint - with no difference in value. It came with bar-end trucks and magnetic couplers on both ends. Much of the value lies with the transformer itself. The lettering is sometimes worn. However, the biggest problem is finding all four plastic "insulators" intact and original. The buyer must beware of reproduction insulators on the market.
