LIONEL 69 TRACK MAINTENANCE CAR MOTORIZED UNIT

One of the toughest motorized units to find complete and unbroken. Built from 1960 to 1962. It was a poor seller for Lionel. Self-powered signal service car with unpainted black body cover. White heat-stamped lettering. Dark gray brush plate cover. Light gray platform assembly with rubberized man and red sign marked "DANGER" and "SAFETY FIRST" in white lettering (sign rotates with directional change). Inverted L-shaped bumper brackets with blue rubberized bumpers - direction controlled by bumper-operated slide. Came in a 1960 style orange box from Kraft St.Joe (#69-15) with insert for the platform, and a small unmarked envelope for the man with sign and directions
  • Did you ask "what in the world were these used for on real railroads?" (especially because the platform doesn't rotate and workers cannot reach the trackside signals!). The Lackawanna had a couple of these so the workers could reach the overhead catenary wire on their electified lines out of Hoboken to Montclair, Gladstone, and Dover. The Pennsy and New Haven also had them here on the East Coast.
