Lionel pw-x-672

UNCAT. 249 2-4-2 STEAM MILITARY SET (1958) RARE

  • This seems to be an undocumented, uncataloged 1958 O-27 military set
  • It was purchased from the original owner and has a typical 1958 basket weave set box, with authentic Lionel pasted- over number sticker
  • Our reference books listing uncataloged sets show 2 entirely different sets using this number
  • The 'Authoritative Guide to 'Lionel's Promotional Outfits, 1960-1969, by John W. Schmid' lists set X-672 as a Montgomery Ward high end offering for 1961 in an orange box with 233-1 steam loco, 3519-1 satellite car. 6343-1 barrel ramp car, 6017 giraffe car and 6017 caboose
  • Greenberg's Guide to Lionel Trains 1945-1969, Vol 4, Uncataloged Sets" lists set 0672 (no X) as a set made exclusively for J.C. Penny in 1964, containing a 223P/212T Santa Fe Alco, 3362 oper log car, 6473 rodeo car,6142 gondola and 6059 caboose
  • The set box is the correct basket weave box for 1958 O-27 sets, the last year the basket weave box was used
  • Similarly the Military rolling stock was only manufactured in 1958 and 1959
  • The evidence seems to indicate that this is a previously undocumented uncataloged Lionel set
  • SPECIAL NOTE : This set is considered a rarity 5 on a scale of 1 to 5. (Rarity 5 is defined in the McComas books as denoting prototypes, one of a kind items, or items made in very limited quantities, typically less than several 100). However, even discounting any value attributal to the set box or because the set is ipreviously undocumented, it has 3 very rare flatcars with a rarity rating of 4 out of 5!
  • The 3 red flatcars in this set each carry 2 loads (U.S. Marine Corps Vehicles). All 3 have a rarity rating of 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5) and are are extremely valuable if they have original vehicles manfactured by Pyro Plastics
  • The vehicular loads are why the flatcars are so valuable; original vehicles are usually either missing or replaced by reproductions
  • The real original loads (vehicles) have the Pyro Plastics symbol molded into the plastic somewhere on the underside
  • This symbol is a triangle inside of a circle
  • Between the circle and triangle the words Made in USA appear
  • Inside the triangle,"PYRO" is written in decreasing size from the P to the O
  • The original loads are difficult to find completely intact. Many fake (reproduction) loads exist, but do not have the Pyro logo molded into the underside of the grey vehicles
  • Black plastic brackets secure the loads to the body of the flatcar
  • Built 1958-59 each flatcar has an unpainted red plastic body with heat stamped LIONEL lettering and car number on both sides, metal brake wheel, AAR (plastic) trucks with two operating couplers. Many of the flatcars will have factory glue marks where they mounted the black axle retainer thru the stake holes in the flatcar.
