  • this set is test run bu like new condition. Beautiful scale illuminated passengers cars, perfect models of the classic Pullman 12 section, 1 drawing room cars from the heyday of real railroading.
  • These were used on every railroad in the country that had sleeping car service, always labeled PULLMAN and always in PULLMAN green paint no matter what railroad they were on.
  • The only exception in the whole USA was the Pennsylvania RR and the Norfolk and Western, who somehow cut a special deal with Pullman to have Tuscan Pullman Cars.
  • Metal 6 wheel trucks.
  • Brand new in master carton; we opened the carton to take the picture (cars include diaphrams (not shown) to allow passengers an enclosed crossing between 2 cars)
  • Hudson's used t o pull trains of up to 18 of these cars along the Hudson on the NYC RR (all labeled Pullman except for the Diners and Baggage cars which were labeled NYC)
  • The original all steel Pullmans contained 12 'sections' and 1 drawing room
  • The drawing room was a private room
  • The sections had one lower birth and one upper birth. Open by d ay with 2 facing seats, the porter made the 2 seats into the lower birth at night, and the upper b irth was hinged and dropped down
  • You climbed a ladder to get up to the upper birth, and you pushed a button to have the porter bring the ladder when you had to get down
  • Curtains were hungs between the aisle and the birth for privacy, b ut weren't sound-proof
  • Car names on these cars, Willow River and Willow Valley) were usually a ssigned to the NYC, but were reassigned to other R ailroads when the NYC was assigned newer all-steel all-bedroom cars
  • On some branch lines, 2 train consists (1 coach and 1 Pullman)were also the norm on the NYC
  • The Lackawanna had a named train called the Interstate E xpress which provided overnight sleeping car service between Syracuse and Philadelphia and betwen Philadelphia and Syracuse every evening.
  • Running on the Lackawanna from Syracuse to Binghamton with other Pullman's, coaches and a fancy lounge car bound for NYC, the Pullman was taken from Binghamton to Scranton by a seperate engine and passed off to the Central of NJ in Scranton on a route bypassing both the Lackawanna and CNJ stations in Scranton, thence to Allentown, w here the Reading took over (adding it to a train w ith a diner and coaches too) for the rest of the t rip to Reading Terminal at 8th and Market in Philadelphia
  • It's in the record books as the only ONE CAR PULLMAN TRAIN in the USA; no coach passengers were carried between Binghamton and Allentown
  • You could actually save a couple of dollars by booking coach from Syracuse to Binghamton and from Allentown to Philadelphia and sleep between 10:45 PM and 6:00 AM. In the early 30's the fare all the way by Pullman was under $ 10 and 2 bucks was a lot
