The 302 Atlantic loco first appeared in 1948 and then was dropped until 1951, when it returned and remained in the line up until 1953. There are at least four variations to this loco. It first came with a four piece metal boiler. When the 302 returned in 1951, it sported a plastic shell boiler but continued with the tinplate tender. Lettering on the tender read "AMERICAN FLYER" in white. In 1953, the 302 received a plastic shell tender. The reverse unit remained in the tender, and the smoke and choo-choo were housed in the loco boiler. Later, some plastic shell tenders received white lettering reading "AMERICAN FLYER LINES". All variations used tinplate trucks with link couplers.
