The Pennsylvania K-5 loco first appeared in 1946 and was made until 1948. It then reappeared in 1951 and 1952 either as the 312 or the 312AC. In 1946 and 1947 the smoke unit was placed in the tender and the reverse unit in the loco boiler. By 1948, the position of each unit had been reversed, the reverse unit was in the tender and the smoke unit was moved to the boiler. Also, the earliest 1946 locos were stamped "Pennsylvania" on the sides of the tender in silver, making it a somewhat rare version of the 312. All others came stamped either "American Flyer" or "American Flyer Lines". The very early units featured the thin shank link coupler, while later units had the weighted link couplers.
