Production of the 650 coach in red or green began in 1946 and lasted through until 1953. The 650 series, along with the heavyweight passenger cars, were the mainstay of Gilbert's passenger fleet until the introduction of streamlined passenger cars in 1950. All 650 cars were illuminated with the exception of a small group made in 1946. Originally manufactured with a plastic base which warped easily, this soon changed to a diecast base and later, in 1952, a sheet metal base. The 650 coaches are often referred to as the "New Haven" coaches, since they were modeled after a New Haven style coach. All cars came equipped with link couplers, tin plate trucks, and white outlines around the windows with white grab irons by the doors.
