Produced as part of a three car set from 1950 until 1952, the 662 came with an offset Vista Dome, a new metal passenger truck, link couplers, and a light. All of the cars in the set rode on a sheet metal base. To reduce weight, Gilbert produced the 662 in chromed plastic in 1952. All the cars had a name plate which read "AMERICAN FLYER LINES", and the number of the car in black lettering. The other cars in the set were the 660 combine, 661 coach and the 663 observation. The add-on 661 coach proved to be the most desirable.
