1938 was a great year for Lionel, as the coming war hasn't affected production yet. Classic art deco illustrated 52 paged paper pulp catalog. Cover features; 700E scale Hudson, 752E UP "City Of Portland", 763E scale Hudson, 250E Hiawatha, 225E Steamer, 616 Flying Yankee, and the 55 airplane flying through the Lionel letters painted by L Meinrad Mayer. By the mid 1930's Lionel had climbed out of the Depression and was racing full speed ahead into one of it's most prosperous and innovative periods of production. With the trend toward realism, Lionel moved to make its models more lifelike and scale(this included accesories). 1938 was also the next to last year of cataloged Standard gauge trains, which by this time was relegated to the back pages of the catalog. The Standard gauge was also some of the rarest Lionel produced with color variations changing, and the use of nickle trim. New innovations included the unveiling of the first automatic couplers, a whole line of operating accessories, and Double OO scale trains(all dominated the last four years of the Prewar era). Featured items included: 700E scale Hudson(also 700K kit form new in 1938), Rail Chief cars, 763E scale Hudson, 752E UP streamliner, 250E Hiawatha, 226E steamer(new in 38), 295W Blue Streak set, 263E O gauge Blue Comet(new in 38), 378W with 400E Standard Gauge Blue Comet set, 392 with Stephen Girard passenger set, 97 Coal Elevator(new in 38), 47 Crossing Gate(new in 38), 300 Hellgate bridge(late colors), 55 Operating Airport(has a fold out blueprint for track layouts), all the great stations and landscaped plots, and so much more. Also included an late added "Notice of Change In Prices" slip, and special letter telling Dad which train set you wanted(space for set number). A classic piece for reference or for the paper collector.
