This is Lionel's elegant model of the Congressional Set - one of the most famous trains of all time! The Congressional ran on the Pennsylvania Railroad between New York and Washington. It was one of the most heavily used trains in the world and in 1952 it was re-equipped with two new eighteen car long train sets. The new cars were all stainless steel silver cars from Budd with distinictive maroon stripes on each car above the windows with the Pennsylvania lettering in gold. Two maroon GG1's with five stripes were repainted, and assigned to the Congressionals (this was the first time the Pennsy deviated from the Brunswick green GG1's or from tuscan passenger cars). Each train made a round trip each day beween NYC and Washington DC, with morning and afternoon departures from both cities. This was luxury train travel at its finest, with fancy coaches, parlor cars with single seating on each side, beautiful flat back observation cars, diners, and lounge cars. It was surpassed only by the Phoebe Snow on the Lackawanna, which had the same flat back observation cars, but the Lackawannas observations were open to all passengers, not just Pullman passengers paying extra fare to ride in the parlor cars. Lionel introduced this set in 1955 with the 2340 five striped maroon GG1 - in 1956 it was produced with the 2360 maroon five striped GG1. The Lionel set also was first class all the way.
