The 2279W or 818 New Haven EP-5 electric freight set was one of seven O-gauge sets offered in 1957. It was the third and last of the New Haven electric cataloged sets following the two sets from 1956. A 2350 New Haven EP-5 electric locomotive with Magnetraction, light, horn, operating couplers, metal base and two operating pantographs headed the set. The 2350 came in several variations, but the set normally contained the most common version with the white "N" & orange "H" with nose decal. The locomotive box was a "revised carton" supplied by the Express Container Corp. and was numbered 2350-12. Operating instructions were numbered either 2350-14-7-56 or 2351-14-4-57. The 3424 Wabash brakeman car came in a "Late Classic" box numbered 3424-89. The box includes a "U" shaped corrugated insert with a cut out to protect the brakeman, and a 3424-100 low bridge signal set in a separate box numbered 3424-88. The signal set includes two poles/telltales and an envelope 3424-94 containing two 3424-80 support bases, two 3424-86 O gauge track contacts, two 3424-85 027 track contacts, and a 3424-95 instruction sheet titled "How to Operate Lionel No. 3424 Brakeman Car with Low Bridge Signals" numbered 3424-95-8-56 or 3424-95-5-57. The 6464-425 New Haven box car was black with orange doors and white lettering and came in a "Late Classic" box numbered 6464-430. The 6424 flat with two autos came in a "Late Classic" box numbered 6424-13. The autos came in two of four colors: red, blue/green, yellow or white. The 6477 miscellaneous car came with five gray plastic pipes in a "Late Classic" box numbered 6477-3. The 6427 Lionel Lines porthole caboose came in a "Late Classic" box marked 6427-1 on the end and numbered 6427-5. The set box was a "Basket Weave" type. O gauge track consisted of 8 curved sections, 7 straight, UCS, lock-on and two coils of green wire. The UCS was boxed in a "Late Classic" box that was numbered UCS-22. Also included was a 1957 catalog and a instruction booklet "How to Operate Lionel Trains and Accessories". This booklet could be either the 1956/1957 version with the lion on the front cover or the 1958/1959 version with the layout on the front cover.
