| The 2242 New Haven F3 AB locomotive is one of the rarest (if not the rarest) of the twelve F3 road names produced by Lionel. Similarly, this set is one of the rarest of all time, and is also one of the few sets manufactured during the Post-War period that had matching road names on some of the cars. Because of the rarity, many fake New Haven F3's exist. There are two important identifiers that distinguish real New Havens from the fakes and counterfeits: 1) The molded simulated handle on the nose door was eliminated on the bodies used for the New Haven. This was done to facilitate the heat-stamping of the white "NH" on the door (most fakes will have the door handle), and 2) The orange "NH" on the sides is heat-stamped - fakes are silk screened. The cars include a 3444 animated gondola with directions dated 5-57, 6357 maroon caboose with metal trucks, 6464-85 automobile flat car with AAR trucks, 6464-425 New Haven box car with metal trucks (usually with a full serif), and a 6468- 425 New Haven double door box car with metal trucks and black (not brown) doors. The factory did not include a transformer with this set, but did include 12 Super O curved track sections, three straight track sections, an insulated track piece, a UCS 37-25, #90 controller, #43 power track section, and two #81-32 connecting coiled wiresPaperwork included a #39-7 instruction sheet dated 5-59, service station list dated 56- 57, instruction sheet for a single motor F3, and an operating packet 39-25 (this included the 37- 25 uncoupling track section, the #90 controller, the #43 power track section, the two #81-32 connecting wires, and the instruction sheet). One reference guide indicates the operating pack number is 39-5 - whether both were used alternatively is a question that no one seems to have an answer for or know for sure! Some people say the 39-5 did not exist, only the 39-25...! |
