This RDC was produced by Lionel in 1957 and 1958. Two of these were included as part of the 2276W set in 1957 with a 404 baggage RDC unit as the "engine". The prototypes were some of the more popular trains in the 1950's. These were some of the first air conditioned trains to enter service on major railroads. They were used heavily on the Baltimore and Ohio as well as the Canadian National. Amtrak also used them once that entity was created by the Federal Government. The beauty of these units is that they can operate seamlessly as a single unit or in a lengthy train. It has "BUDD RDC-9" adhesive nameplates on both sides, featuring the official logo of the BUDD company. The body is painted silver and the blue lettering is heat-stamped. It is very difficult to find one of these in top-shelf condition because the silver "dinged up" so easily. This item also came with diecast trucks and interior illumination. A Mint one sells for $1,000 or more. Some were sold for separate sale but the Budd items were not popular with the consumers of the day. The train was very plain compared to some of the colorful F3-plus freight car sets and steam engines available for similar prices.
