These three green Madison passenger cars were aquired by Don Shaw from Joe Ranker in 1953. They were part of a group of factory protoypes, including the famous prototype of the Lionel lift bridge, a prototype khaki Jersey Central Fairbanks Morse Trainmaster locomotive and a green track cleaning car (molded in green plastic instead of orange). We believe they are an important part of Lionel history, therefore we have described the story of what we know about these cars and how two became a part of Don's collection. Joe Ranker was a famous collector who had many connections and also ran a famous train show at the Wayne, NJ firehouse in the 1960's and 1970's. He called and invited Don to view a collection which he advised had belonged to Joe Bonnano, who in turn was known to have close connections to the Lionel factory. The green cars, the track cleaner and the FM were on display (along with 100's of other regular production items). Don purchased the green passenger cars and track cleaner along with other items, all the while wishing he had enough money to buy everything! He did not purchase the FM. Moreover, Joe did not mention the lift bridge as he had already promised that to Allison "Al" Cox (a famous dealer in Seattle who regularly published a 50 page mimieograhed list of Lionel for sale!). The factory considered producing these as a varation of the maroon Madison, Manhattan, and Irvington cars. These are maroon 2628 Manhattan (Madison) cars, obviously repainted in Pullman green. Include two Pullmans and one modified car to be an observation. An observation car was never produced. In later years the lift bridge was offered for sale for $1
