This General Electric 44 ton switcher was catalogued in 1956 and 1957. It was the motive power in set 1545 in 1956. It was also available for separate sale. The prototypes were scattered through many railroad yards all over the world including the United States, Saudi Arabia, India and Australia. A total of 385 units were produced between 1940 and 1956. The Northern Pacific owned just two of these workhorses - 98 and 99. Lionel did not copy the prototypical specifications exactly, but these engines still look sharp. The body is an unpainted black plastic. All of the letters, numbers and "NP" logos are heat-stamped. The yellow stripe along the base of the body is painted, as are the railings. This engine features a single, powerful, Pullmor motor, three-position electronic reverse unit, a headlight at one end, diecast trucks and operating couplers at both ends and an ornamental horn and bell. This engine did not come with an operating horn.
