This car was produced from 1954 until 1956. It was only available as part of one set - the 2239W Illinois Central F3 set from 1955. It was also available for separate sale through its years of production. All of them came as a Type 2a body mold (Lionel made several minor changes to the body mold of its box cars over the years. The variations center mostly around the rivet patterns on the sides). There were two main areas of variation - the color of the body mold and how the lettering was applied. Some cars were made with a gray body mold, with the gray and red colors painted on. Others were made with a red body mold, and only the gray was painted. The red parts were simply left unpainted. The lettering was sometimes applied with a heat stamp, and other times with a rubber stamp. Heat-stamping leaves an indentation around the edges of the lettering because it was pressed into the plastic. The rubber stamp left no such trace, as it just applied the lettering on top of the paint. This car came with bar-end, diecast trucks, a separately applied brake wheel, and operating couplers at both ends.
