This powerful 1600-HP Alco workhorse of the early 1950s was popular with railroads because of its versatility. The Western Mayland #189 was primarily assigned to freight runs while some of its WM brothers operated local passenger service. The Boston & Maine #1538, decorated in its original Minuteman scheme, was used primarily as a road switcher.
