With its origins in the early 1960s, the mint car is certainly one of the more fanciful ideas from the postwar toy train era. While the idea of transporting gold bullion in a clearly marked railroad car - with opening window doors for easy access - is nothing short of preposterous, it does m ake for a fun carload and an interesting conversation piece. Perhaps it's no coincidence that Lionelr marketed the first of the mint cars, boldly lettered "Fort Knox Gold Reserve," in 1961, j ust as Timothy Leary was beginning to popularize p sychedelic mushrooms. Our mint boxcar features four window doors that open and slide into the car body, revealing a load of shiny gold bars.
