Lionel pre-1100
MICKEY MOUSE HAND CAR 1934
First appearing in 1934, these clockwork toys gave Lionel a product with a low retail price- important in those Depression-torn days. Legend claims these toys were responsible for preventing the collapse of Lionel, but like many legends around the company, a lot of myth added to the mystique. But we are certain this car, designed by Walt Disney himself, pulled Lionel out of bankruptcy. When introduced as an uncataloged item in 1934, the hand car had a red base. On it rode Micky and Minnie Mouse, furiously pumping the levers. The figures were make from plaster and most found today are broken, often missing an ear, an entire head or other parts. |
