Lionel pre-616

LIONEL 616 FLYING YANKEE STREAMLINED DIESEL SET

Built by Lionel from 1935 to 1941. This set would become one of the most popular O gauge Pre-War sets produced. The Flying Yankee was modelled after the Boston and Maine Railroad's famous articulated streamliner train. Contents included powered 616E or 616W (later version with whistle), two 617 coaches, 618 observation car and three connecting vestibules. Standard variation has metal chrome fluted cars with stamped number, a powered gunmetal painted front nose (with diecast top) and metal painted tail portion of the observation. Illuminated interior with frosted celluloid windows. Rare early 1935 versions came with chrome front and painted black roof or red painted roof. A Pre-War all time classic (also one of the best running pre-war train sets made).
