Built in 1956 only. Lionel's only five color F3. Cataloged as AB unit with a blue plastic body mold. Blue areas are unpainted with the blue being the color of the body mold. Has gray painted roof, white painted nose and upper quarter, and black painted lower side stripe accented with rubber-stamped yellow stripe. The yellow lettering is heat-stamped. No decal on the nose, the nose is rubber-stamped with black and yellow stripes that join the side stripes. Black chassis with black painted pilot and chemically blackened side frames. Twin vertical motors, Magnetraction and horn. Original B&O's must be on blue plastic shells. There are many fakes on grey plastic shells. The fakes have silk screened yellow stripes and lettering, and differ radically in other respects. There are a minute quantity of real original grey shell B&O's painted blue, apparently to provide replacements to service stations. We have seen just three in 40 years (we have one in our private collection). Also note that the noses of many original B&O F3's were cracked in the factory because the headlight lens was inserted upside down. Frequently this crack ran all the way down the nose from the headlight to the base of the shell. |
